Spa & Hot Tub Test Strips
    Frequently Asked Questions

    • How often should I test my hot tub water?

Test hot tub water 2–3 times per week, always before use, and after each session with multiple people. Hot tub water chemistry shifts rapidly — a single soak can noticeably affect sanitizer levels and pH in a 250–500 gallon tub.

    • What parameters should I test in a hot tub and what are the ideal ranges?

Test for: Bromine 2–4 ppm (or Chlorine 1–3 ppm), pH 7.2–7.8, Total Alkalinity 80–120 ppm, Calcium Hardness 150–250 ppm. Some test strips also measure CYA — keep at 30–50 ppm only if using dichlor chlorine. Testing all five parameters 2–3 times per week catches imbalances before they affect bathers or equipment.

    • How do I read HTH spa™ Test Strip results accurately?

Dip the strip in water at elbow depth for 2 seconds, remove and shake once and hold flat. Immediately compare each color pad to the chart on the bottle in bright natural or indoor light — never in direct sunlight. Read from left to right within 30 seconds. If a color is ambiguous or between two values, retest with a fresh strip. You can also snap a photo of your test strip in the HTH™ Test to Swim™ app for accurate results and personalized recommendations.

    • Why do my hot tub test strip results seem inconsistent?

Inconsistent readings can result from: strips stored in a humid location (moisture degrades reagents), strips past their expiration date, reading in poor or direct sunlight, waiting too long after dipping before comparing, or genuinely rapid chemistry changes in the tub. Store strips tightly capped in a cool, dry location and check the expiration date. When in doubt, test twice.

    • What should I do if my hot tub test strip shows zero sanitizer?

If sanitizer reads zero, do not use the hot tub — bacteria can multiply rapidly in warm water without any sanitizer present. Add the appropriate dose of HTH spa™ Bromine Tablets or HTH spa™ Clear Chlorinating Sanitizer immediately, run the jets for 20–30 minutes, retest, and do not enter until levels reach 2–4 ppm (bromine) or 3–5 ppm (chlorine). Also shock the tub to address any buildup from the period without sanitizer.

    • Can I use pool test strips for my hot tub?

Pool test strips are calibrated for different target ranges and will not reflect the correct ideal values for a hot tub environment. Always use spa-specific test strips like HTH spa™ Test Strips, which are designed for the higher temperatures, smaller water volume, and different sanitizer ranges of a hot tub.

    • How long are hot tub test strips good for after opening?

Most test strips remain effective for 12–18 months after opening when stored properly — tightly capped in a cool, dry location away from humidity, sunlight, and heat. Never store strips in the bathroom or near the hot tub itself, where steam and humidity accelerate degradation. Always check the printed expiration date on the bottom of the bottle.
